Q&A Session
Jeffrey, you playing just about any Star Trek species and character anyone could throw at you is legendary. But is there any one of the Trek aliens you’d still most like to take a shot at—and what would they be or do?
Yes, Shran. As we all sadly know, Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled after just 4 seasons. So many more stories left to tell about this part of the Star Trek timeline. I see Shran, like myself, as older with maybe his military career behind him, but still active and involved perhaps diplomatically keeping sentry on the safety and security of Andoria and its people.
Or I see him in some sort of mentoring position passing along to a new generation his insights and knowledge.
Do you have a favorite memory from your previous voyages on Star Trek: The Cruise?
Two vivid images come to mind about past cruises. First, performing with the Star Trek Rack Pack on the ship’s state-of-the-art stage. Such a glorious sight looking out on a theatre filled with Trek lovers like myself. All of us celebrating all things Trek. Such joy.
Second, the glorious, peaceful, introspective time I spent on those previous voyages simply sitting on my balcony utterly awestruck and captivated by the vast beauty of the open sea.
We love your Edgar Allan Poe one-man show, “Nevermore.” If he could time-travel and be with us today, what kind of a classic Poe thriller might he set on board a cruise at sea?
Actually, there is a Poe story set at sea! And it isn’t a just a story. It’s Poe’s one and only novel – The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Our hero, Pym, stows away on a whaling vessel. It’s an adventurous tale of a long sea voyage to the North and South Poles populated with mutinies, shipwrecks, cannibalism, hostile natives, and more. Some say it partly inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick!
We know you’re an amazing actor, what other talents do you have that we don’t know about?
When I was a small boy I loved drawing. Mostly imaginary people’s faces which makes some sense as I eventually became an actor. I suppose I was always interested in human behavior. I still draw occasionally. In my teens, I wanted to be a drummer, but when the acting bug came along I decided drums were way too cumbersome for an actor’s roaming lifestyle.
Early in my career, I was in a play where I learned a few basic chords on a guitar to play in the background while another actor recited a poem. I hadn’t played a guitar before then, but I have played the guitar ever since. It has been and still is my joy, my therapy, and a comfort to me throughout life.
Also, I’m pretty talented at finding things that are lost in our house.
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
Go sea glass hunting at the beach, eating sushi, playing with my dog, reading a great book, taking a hike in the country, and watching baseball.
What goal are you working toward right now?
Working on patience, tolerance and the search for wisdom.
A lot of work to be done.
