Hey, cruisers!

I’ve been on 10 Star Trek: The Cruise voyages (I know the math is weird—year two had two sailings) so far, and I’ve seen a lot—and I mean a lot—of cosplay over that time. Some jaw dropping, some mic dropping, and yes, even some panty dropping! As you assemble your uniforms, phasers, and group mash-ups, I thought I’d share my top ten cosplay tips and tricks!

1. Bring wrinkle releaser to spritz away creases. Remember that irons and steamers aren’t allowed on the ship, but you can totally spray the lines out of your rumpled fabrics. 
2. Pack all the components of your cosplay together. The last thing you want to do moments before getting dressed is to have to search for your tricorder, Trill spots, or trousers. 
3. If you plan on wearing your cosplay all night (and/or all day!) try to wear something that’s at least moderately comfortable and breathable! Otherwise, you may have to take scheduled breaks to rest or air out, and you probably don’t want to be exhausted or sweaty until you’re dancing the night away! Plus, remember that whatever you’re wearing may have to fit or be manageable within a restroom, so hydrate accordingly!
4. When participating in the costume contest pre-judging, be sure to speak loudly and clearly so the judges can hear you and, above all, make sure they know all about how you built your cosplay. This is not the time to be humble, so let the judges know all about the time and care you took in putting your outfit together.
5. Be careful when using makeup (I’m looking at you, you fabulous green Orions and blue Andorians!) on your hands. Some makeup rubs off super easily, so you could wind up leaving finger and handprints on everything from elevator buttons to cocktail glasses to your partner’s, well…whatever.
6. If you’re cosplaying as someone (or something) that references a deep cut or super niche moment, you’ll probably be stopped for tons of photos and conversations, so build in a little extra time when plotting your route from one place to another. 
7. You don’t have to be screen-accurate or spend a ton of money and time on your cosplay to be authentic—and authentically you. It’s super hard to get everything to look exactly like it did in that one scene from that one episode (that’s why professional costume designers get paid the big bucks). Remember that you, not the style of comm badge or height of your boots is what makes your cosplay special!
8. Stains, breaks, and other mishaps may happen, so bring along a detergent pen, tape or glue, and a sewing kit for last-minute repairs.
9. Stay updated on the theme nights to determine if at least some parts of your cosplay can be repurposed throughout the sailing. You may not have to bring five different comm badges if you didn’t want to (I mean, I am, but hey–you do you!)
10. And finally: Remember that the whole point of cosplay is to be creative and have fun!
