Hey, cruisers!
Every year on September 8th, fans around the globe pause to mark Star Trek Day—the anniversary of the night in 1966 when The Original Series first broadcast into living rooms—sometimes on a family’s first color television—and changed popular culture, and the world, forever. This year’s, Star Trek Day hits a little differently. We aren’t just celebrating another stardate; we’re cruising through the center of a monumental 60-year milestone—one that espouses Gene Roddenberry’s hopeful vision of the future during a time when it can sometimes be difficult to be hopeful.
Sixty years of bold exploration. Sixty years of believing that humanity can grow and learn. Sixty years of reminding us that our differences make us stronger, and that the future—our bold future—can be something fabulous. And, it’s just a few years less than sixty of asking one another who are favorite captain is, which ship is the best, and debating how, exactly, a transporter works!
On September 8th, you’ll see the worldwide fandom erupting online, streaming special panels, rewatching iconic episodes, and breaking out their favorite cosplay. It’s an incredible global moment. But if Star Trek Day is the annual global moment where we celebrate the franchise, Star Trek: The Cruise is where that spirit gets fully distilled, concentrated, and brought to life.
A few years ago, I wrote a book called “Starfleet Is…” It was as much a celebration of the Federation’s ideals as it was a testament to the many shared traits the fictional organization had with real-life Star Trek fandom. I believed words like “diverse,” “loyal,” “fun,” “smart,” and of course “hopeful” were applicable to both groups. And now, as we celebrate Star Trek’s 60th and look toward our epic 10th Anniversary sailing in 2027, I think it’s even more true. We aren’t just celebrating a television show when we come together; we’re celebrating six decades of community, creativity, and connection. We are living out Gene Roddenberry’s vision—one crew, all heading toward the same bright horizon.
So, join me in raising a glass or pouring one out (whether it’s a cup Earl Grey, a hot mug of coffee, or a glass of Romulan ale) this Star Trek Day (and onboard—especially if you have the drink package!), and be sure take a moment to look back at 60 years of incredible history, around at your Star Trek friends and family, and toward the great times ahead of us.
